in my opinion, mother tongue translation is not a medium to assist the learning of second language. translating english to bahasa melayu is more to interfering with the learning of english language. some of the university students nowadays who lacks in communicating in english prefer to translate english sentences to their mother tongue language which is bahasa melayu. by doing so, they claimed that they can understand that particular sentence better and can increase their knowledge in communicating in English. I have to agree and disagree with that opinion. This is because I do think that students can understand better by translating the sentences to bahasa melayu but at the same time, students will be prone to make mistakes when they are constructing sentences or even communicating with their friends. By translating each and every sentence that they read from English to bahasa melayu, most likely they will translate sentences from bahasa melayu to English too. This will result in having sentences with direct translations. These direct translated sentences are most likely to have grammatical errors and the sentence is jumbled up and not in order. Thus, students will have such difficult time to learn English the proper way by constantly translating sentences into their mother tongue language.

In my point of view, mother tongue translation is a medium of assisting second language learning. With translation in the second language class, we will remember each word that we learn in the class. That is because it is easy to remember the word that we know the meaning of it but it is very difficult to remember the word that we dont know what it is mean.Mother tongue also is a languages that can't be separeted from us. It will take a long time for us to learn second language and thats why mother tongue translate is needed in second languages learning. But the uses of the mother tongue must be minimize because it will effect the second language if it is out of control.

I think mother tongue translation a medium of assisting second language learning. With the translation of second language, student can understand the sentences easier.Sometimes the sentences we doesn't know the meaning. Thus with the help of mother tongue translation the sentences is easy to understand.Second language learning is difficult to study as we use the mother tongue language as our major conversation in our daily life. Hence, we must practice to talk or speak in second language learning in our daily time.

Based on this particular question, I think that mother tongue translation which is in Bahasa Melayu is such a strong medium of assisting second language which is in English, so I'm definitely agree with you Afifuddin. This is because mother language is such an alternative way for those people especially student who want to learn second language for the first time. Moreover, it is also can encourage students to learn second language easily as well as regularly without thinking that learn the second language is just wasting their time. For instance, in order to improve the student's writing skill in second language, the students can write an essay in mother language first. Then, they can translate that particular essay which is from mother language into second language. ‘Practice make perfect’, as long as the students do their exercise regularly, they can enhance their skill as fast as possible. Later on, when the students have mastered in two types of language which are mother tongue and second language, they can easily write through an essay in second language which is in English without need to make translation from Bahasa Melayu into English. Indeed, I strongly assert as true that mother language translation is a medium of assisting second language learning.

Regarding this particular topic,I think mother tongue translation which is bahasa melayu is very strongly medium of assisting our second language which is english. For those who first time learn about english im very sure they will make direct translation during speaking or talking with other person.Because they do not have any basic grammar for english language.Beside that, during we in the primary school,we always write an essay using direct translation from our mother tongue language.Next,i think by using our mother language as a medium to learn second language it will be more easier for students.Student also need to make a lot of practices and speaking with a person which very well in the second language to improve their language.By doing this their chance to improve their's skill in second language as fast as possible. If they already mastered in second language they will not have any problem to do any types of essay and can speaking more properly. In conclusion i strongly agree that our mother language will act as a medium for our second language learning.

Salam, for me I do think that mother tongue translation is a medium of assisting second language learning. This is because mother tongue is a language that we learn from birth. Moreover, mother tongue is the only language that we expert. So, we need our mother tongue as a translation medium in order to learn second language. Sometime, in learn second language we cannot even understand the meaning without our mother tongue translation. Mother language is better to understand in learning second language. But, most of the students sometime do direct translate in learning second language. This is because they try to guess the meaning of the second language, they not try to understand the meaning of the second language. Definitely, mother tongue is bit interference in learning second language. But, if the students are learning in a right way, it will not be a problem to them. Thanks.

=) As one of the Mdm. Azzyati student, i think that mother tongue or Bahasa Melayu would be the most effective medium for studying English. For me, it is important for using Bahasa Melayu for translating the second language. Without translate it to the Bahasa Melayu, I think that many people faced problems while speaking English. As the result. there are many students that using broken English. This is because the didn't practice. Furthermore, by translate it to Bahasa Melayu, we will learn many vocabularies and grammars. This will make we feel very confident when speaking English with others. In the nutshell, practice make perfect. If we practice a lot ,we can speak English well. So, as the starter, you have to speak English a lot by the help of translating Bahasa Melayu.

In my opinion, mother tounge translation is an interference to someone learning a second language.
The second language would not be practised as much because of the usage of the mother tounge. This will hasten the mastery of the second language. Proof of this is that students learning in their own home country will find it harder to learn a second language compared to students who is living in the country where everyone speaks the second language. This is because in the country where the second language is the main language, one would be forced to use the language as part of their daily lives. This will enhance the chance of the students mastering the second language.

In my opinion, i think mother tongue translation is a medium of assisting second language learning or an interference. This is because, all languages in the world is the "center of language" that must be controlled before one can use the language effectively. It is very important in the process of organizing and building sentences either in writing or conversation. In other words, the vocabulary can be defined as a collection of all words that can be understood by a person and can be used to set up new signs in a language. Addition of a lexicon or vocabulary in general is very important in the process of learning a language or in the process to develop the skills in a language that is already controlled. As a simple example, "Kereta saya berhenti secara tiba-tiba apabila tayarnya pancit". So the vocabulary or the vocabulary you need to know as "tiba-tiba" or in English it "sudden". So English verse that can you create like this "My car stopped abruptly When the tire punctured". Easy, right?

In my point of view, i strongly believe that the mother tongue translation will assist the second language learning. it is because mother tongue is a part of growing up from we are babies until we had become individual. so we are compatible enough to speak, write or understand this language as we had been teached since our childhood..With mother tongue translation, we will easily to remember words and vocabulary that we learn in class. In a second language learning class, it becomes easier for the teacher to teach grammar rules of the new language to students by giving them example that with everyday situations in the mother tongue, which becomes the medium of conversation at the starting level of using the second language. However, to create a fluency in a new language, it becomes important to avoid the mother tongue for interaction at later stages of second language learning. The mother tongue has influence on every aspect of the decoding process. let see if a child has weaker decoding abilities in the mother tongue, it will reflect low performance in second language acquisition as well. The main condition for a successful learning of a second language is strong perception and comprehension capabilities in the mother tongue.

In my point of view, mother tongue translation is a medium of assisting second language learning, not interference. Based on my experience, I always translate the word that I don’t understand the meaning from second language to mother tongue. This is working only to understand meaning of the second language word, not to make a complex sentence. Translation is translating the second language word to mother tongue. So, it is hard to create the second language sentence if we don’t know the basic of the sentence making for second language. In conclusion, mother tongue translation is a medium of assisting second language only learning the meaning of the word.

Assalamualaikum to my fellow friends.

In my point of view, by using mother tongue translation as a medium to learn second language has its pros and cons. Let start with the good aspect first, to understand a new word in the second language, people normally need to translate it into their mother tongue language. However, translation to the same language also needed for better understanding especially to use the word appropriately in a sentence. A direct translation from mother tongue to other language may be the interference in learning new language because each languages have it unique way to pronounce and write it. So, direct translation can cause the sentence could be wrong grammatically or less gramatis. Thank you

Is mother tongue translation a medium of assisting second language learning or an interference? What do you think?
In my opinion, i think that it does assisting us in learnig the second language because students will enhance their vocabulary and improve their writing. But, students are not encourage to use the translation often as it will reduce their creativity. I also agreed with Sa'id that "tiba-tiba" will not be translate to "sudden-sudden". It is grammartically error.

I do think that mother tongue translation is a medium of assisting second language learning. the reason why i state the statement is to understand certain words we should get the meaning, and it is easily for us to get the meaning in our mother tongue, that it Bahasa Malaysia. We also can construct a good sentences by forming a sentence using Bahasa malaysia first and then translate it to english but not direct translation. From that way,we can control and direct our opinion in the way that it suppose to.Thus, I strongly agree that mother tongue translation is a medium of assisting second language learning and not an interference.

Hello my friends..
In my opinion, using mother tongue language as a medium of assisting second language is a good way of learning. It is because, by using our own mother tongue language as a medium, it will help us a lot in order to get more understand the meaning of the sentence of the second language. Moreover this method will also increase our interest to learn the second language as we understand the content of what we study. However this way of learning also has a bad influence to the students as they will try to translate the second language directly to their mother tongue. The direct translation will change the true meaning of the second language sentence. This will cause the students to use the wrong sentences when they are applying it for the second language. So in order to avoid this mistake, students have to know wisely how to use their own mother tongue as a medium to assist the second language.OK.That’s all from me. Thank you

Yes. Absolutely yes of course. Mother tongue translation is a medium of assisting second language learning and not an interference. This is because it can provide better understanding about the meaning of the word in the second language by explain it in mother tongue language. Besides, it also can make the student speak well in the second language because the student is confident about the words that they speak, the words that they truly understand after they use mother tongue to translate the words. All in all, in my opinion, learning second language using mother tongue is the best way to success in using the second language.

In my opinion, the mother tongue is the medium that helps learning a second language. This is because, the mother tongue can expand the skills of an individual in vocabulary especially. In addition, mother tongue can give a clear understanding of second language. But the most important thing to take as a consideration for a student is they should be wise in distinguishing between the mother tongue and the second language in terms of the use of correct grammar, language style, and pronunciation. Students must avoid direct translation as their meaning will be different. For a beginner in study second language, mother language is very essential as they will search for a word in second language meaning in dictionary by using their mother tongue. Thus, it is best to said that mother tongue can assisting to perform or conquer in second language.

This is because mother tongue can help student to more understanding the meaning of English words that rarely they heard or read. This can improving student's skills in writing because they can understanding what are they wrote. Students also can be good in constructing an essay when mother tongue assisting them. This is because students nowadays had some big problem in constructing essay in English words. Sometimes they do not know which words they want to use. Mother tongue can help them by understanding how to use the correct words in correct time. Furthermore, students are more remember the meaning of unusual English words in Malay language from the meaning in English versions. for me, i believe that mother tongue is an interference in the learning of second language.it present an extra step that gets in the way.it is because, without translation one cannot learn the true meanings and connotations of each words and phrases.just remember the chubby scene when we were babies no one translated our gibberish and we were each able to obtain a command of our native language.so, mother tongue is absolutely an interference.

Qurra said...

Firstly, lets recall the time when you were still an infant; did you have a dictionary that translates your mother tongue language into your babyish talk? Of course not! Well then, how did you gain such a good command of your mother tongue? The answer is, by listening and conversing in that particular language since you were born. As you grew up, you grasped the meaning of words by listening to the tone of the speaker and scrutinizing their facial and body gestures. Therefore in my opinion, mother tongue translation is not a medium that is of any real assistance when it comes to learning a second language. A direct translation of two languages is not fully correct in structure or meaning for most cases, especially so in the case of proverbs and idioms. However, some students makes the mistake of translating directly sentences in their mother tongue to that of their second language, without first considering the accuracy of their grammar or vocabulary, thus resulting in jumbled up sentences’ structures. Besides that, some students have trouble in writing their essays because they tried to reconstruct second language sentences by translating the words directly from their mother tongue. Bear in mind some words have multiple meanings. A word or phrase cannot be simply translated from one language to the other nor constructed into a sentence without first understanding the meaning and the proper usage of it. For instance, try translating this English proverb directly into Malay words; ‘Let the cat out of the bag’. It will give a totally different meaning than that which is intended, right? Therefore, in a way, mother language translation is actually a barrier that can prevent students from thoroughly learning a second language.

For me, a mother tongue translation is a great medium of assisting second language learning. Why am I saying so? Well, from my experience, to learn a new language we first must look back to our basic language; mother tongue which is Bahasa Melayu. This is because trough this we can know the meaning of some of the words that we could not understand. This will make us really understand the word rather than just guessing the meaning of the words. Next, with the mother tongue translation, it also will increase our interest in learning the second language. For example as a student they will tend to speak with their friends using the second language. With that, I totally agree that mother tongue translation is a great medium of assisting second language learning.

i do think that mother tongue translation is a medium of assisting second language learning. Yet, it only works for the earlier learner. this is because, people who are new to second language tend to link their first language in order to understand themselves on a particular issues. As it matter of fact , when people get used to the second language , mother tongue should be in their heart, not in their mouth. well, this should be practiced because, if we have been in the shadow of mother tongue for all this while, we might end up as an English broker. Furthermore, it also can corrode our grammar and vocabulary as well. hence, i do think that mother tongue is essential to everybody, but it only come one's way to first timer.

Is mother tongue translation a medium of assisting second language learning or in interference? Based on this particular topic, my point of view is mother tongue which is malay is an interference. It is no doubt that it is easy to remember some particular words if we understand the meaning in our mother tongue, but how if we translate a sentence that is in our mother tongue into international language? Does it bring the same meaning? It’s definitely not. So our language cannot be improve due to we always use our mother tongue and translate it into international language. It is because it is directly translation and difficult for outsider to understand what are we talking about. So, mother tongue is an interference for those who are new in learning second language.

in my opinion, of course mother tongue is the best medium to translate the second language. for example, we learn English with Malay translation in beginning. for the student in school, teacher must teach students via Malay translation. in school, via Malay translation, student is easy to understand words by words. however, in university, for example, TESL student no more need to translate word by word to mother tongue. in addition, i have the experience learn Korean language, Hangul, the lecturer not translate words by words in English or Malay. they will talk in Korean and we need to understand our self. it very difficult to understand the what they are talking. so is better to translate the second language to mother tongue.

In my opinion, mother tongue translation act as a medium of assisting second language learning and therefore is not an interference at all. This is because, in order to understand a word or sentence in other language, we must first compare it with a word or sentence in our own language. For example, if we want to understand the meaning of the word 'car' in the english language, we must first find a word that has the same meaning in our language which is 'kereta' to make it easier for us to understand the word. This is because, by comparing this two words, we would discover the meaning of the word in the second language much more easier and faster and therefore can help us to study the second language with some guidelines and also directions. Other than that, with the use of mother tongue translation in studying a second language, we would also find that it is much more interesting to study the language. This is because, by translating the second language to our own, we would be more attracted to study the language as we tend to find more meanings to other words. We would do this as we would want to know what is the word used in the second language to define the meaning of a word in our language. Therefore,we will be happy to study the language and we will always study the language in joy. Although we might make some grammar error in constructing sentences in the second language as it is different from ours, but in time I am sure that we can improve our weaknesses. In conclusion, I agree with the fact that mother tongue translation act as a medium in studying a second language.

It also will help us to more understand the meaning of language words. This also can help to improve their writing skill. But we cannot too depend on the mother tongue to understand the second language because it will affect the grammar of the second language. As we know, not all the language has the same style of grammar. It also can prevent them from give up learning the second language just because they cannot understand the language. By using the mother tongue, it will help them to more understand the word and give them confident to use it.

In my opinion, mother tongue translation is both assistant and interference to the second language learners depending on their level of proficiency. For beginners, they are better to learn second language by translating it to the mother tongue. This is because they are not used to the language. By translating it to the mother tongue, they can understand new words and increase their vocabulary. For intermediary and advance learner, mother tongue translation will be interference to the learners as it will slow down the process of learning because they sometimes made a direct translation. Direct translation can cause grammatical mistakes and using inappropriate words in sentences. Therefore, by referring to the learner's level of proficiency, they should consider whether to translate second language to mother tongue language or not.

Nasruddin Shah said...

What an interesting topic discussion indeed. For me, it all depends on the student itself as they are the one who know how to improve themselves in second language study. To translate it into our mother tongue does provides a great help to us but it should not be done too occasionally. This is to avoid the students to depend solely on the translation in writing. Students who translate the second language too often will face trouble while writing. Too much translation will make students become lack of confidence and always try to interpret the second language into direct translation. They have to practice writing without using any translation does enhance their writing skills.

I agree with this topic. This is because mother tongue helps us to understand more about the second language in learning new words. For example, when we learn second language we need translation for the advance word such as science terms. if we didn't use the mother tongue language we do not know what is the meaning of this words. So, the mother tongue languages helps us in learning the second language. that all from me.
